There is nothing that can compare to an outstanding cover letter. If you want to get an employer’s attention, you will need cover letter that demands their attention.

The cover letter is the first thing that an employer is going to read. It is the precursor to the resume. If the cover letter doesn’t command the attention of the reader right away, then you only have the resume left to do so. Sure, the resume will outline your educational and experiential background, but it doesn’t afford the flexibility of a cover letter.

I had to send a few unsolicited resume cover letters and resumes, while looking for a good meaningful job recently.  I had been working at the same place for a little over two years and recently graduated college.  I was fortunate to have a job, the market being the way it is and all.  Yet I still wanted to make a move for the better.  Again, being that the job market was as slow as it was here in my area.  I decided to go fishing a little, sending my resume and cover letter to places where I would like to work.

What I did was learn as much about the company as I could.  I was working on an unsolicited resume cover letter, after all, and sending my resume with no sort of introduction wasn’t an option.  I wanted to come across genuinely interested in becoming part of the company.  The best way I could figure was by finding out all I could and planting a picture of myself being part of the very fabric of the company.

I put together a resume cover letter that accentuated my skills and recent achievements.  I also, placed much emphasis on my desire to become part of a company that was at the front of my chosen career.  In an effort to stand out, I directed if to the company President and made sure HR received a copy also.  I didn’t want to step on any ones toes.  You know how that can go.

I also made sure to point out the position I wanted and how I would be diligent at accomplishing my goal of becoming an asset to the company.  While at the same time I understood that I had to work my way up and would be willing to start in a different area of the company where my talents could also be utilized.  I know how to be an asset to a company and working my way up wouldn’t be a problem.  I just need an opportunity.

I did land a few interviews from doing this and though I haven’t been hired on the spot.  I have been called back on second interviews.  The detail, I think was in the way I put together my unsolicited resume cover letter.  I don’t think I would have accomplished anything if I wouldn’t have made a custom letter with details about the company.  As a matter of fact, the interviewers were surprised by the knowledge I had of their companies.  I do expect to be hired.  Maybe I’ll do the Napoleon Hill thing and send them a certified letter every hour for a couple of days.  I’ll have to try it and write an article.

“There’s no more space in the medical field.” That’s what I was thinking as I was writing my medical resume cover letter.  Fact is, there is but the ones taking the jobs are those with the highest experience or the knowledge of how to get hired.  I’ve been in the field for several years and have experience just not 25 years like some people do.  I had to find an edge and I used my medical resume cover letter to point it out.

The ideas I share here worked for me. I did the little extra leg work it took to find the information but it paid off.  What I did was nothing out of this world.  My medical resume cover letter simply focused on my desire for the job and the knowledge I had about the place I was applying too.  I made an effort to find out about the place and what kind of recognition it had.  Distinguished personnel I wanted to learn from and how it would enrich my life and the life of the patients.  My experience, I plaid up with my enthusiasm and desire to learn.

I made sure to use the language they understand. Medical resume cover letters should sound medical.  Same as Technical resumes should sound technical.  My medical resume cover letter stood out from the rest because I used terminology I picked up from the research I did and the program I used to help me put the letter together.

Researching the company and learning about the different people and recognition awarded to the place I wanted to be hired by went a long way. I was able to land more interviews because of it.  Though getting hired is not a perfect science.  Experience levels hours available and other things come into play.  Catching a reader’s interest is something I can control.

I incorporated information and wording into my letter, aside from what was suggested by the custom letter I started out with, like “I hope to learn from Jane Doe, who I understand was recognized by what ever organization, group or department for their efforts.”  Most don’t take the time to learn about where they want to work.  Knowing a little can do a lot for your chances at the position.

“Let your medical resume cover letter sell you.”  That’s what I found online.  Not much else on how to accomplish this.  I did find some samples of what to write but they never related to me or my level of experience.  Some had too much information and others were so bland and generic it was like reading a bad hallmark card.

Copying a medical resume cover letter you find online is never a good idea.  Most are the same recycled information.  Filling paper but saying little about you.  You need to make a statement, especially with how competitive the field is getting.  I wish they’d stop running those commercials all day about the medical field.  Anyway, copying is not a good idea because it’s always generic and it doesn’t call the attention of the reader.  You want them to go over your resume.  With a letter that doesn’t engage the reader it not going to happen.

Try to imagine talking to a person, in their own language.  Not to friendly.  Make it easy to read and make reference to parts of your resume that you want them to go over.  Most times they skim over them.  Tell them where to skim for them to find the most relevant information you want them to read.  Keep the letter to one page and supplement what you covered on the cover with what’s on the resume.

What ever you do.  Don’t take a medical resume cover letter and all its information from an online source and keep the experience as your own.  This is not the field to do it in.  It’s not advisable in any field, much less in the medical field.  The medical field has a lot to offer and there will always be opportunity.

For those who want to do the little extra work it takes, the medical resume cover letter, will sell you if you present it well.  A custom letter is what worked best for me and my family.  There are two nurses in my family and one of us is in the educational field.  We all used the same tactics and fortunately we got jobs in a relatively short period of time.

With so much information a medical resume cover letter can be a task to write.  Not to mention the work involved if you’re making it custom to the place you’re applying too.  This is something I would always do with my resume.  My idea was to stand out land the interview and let the rest fall where it may.  Preferably with me hired.

I over came the difficulties of writing my medical resume cover letters when I figured out that if you write the letter in familiar language to the reader it instantly gives the reader confidence.  That’s why usually people with experience get hired.  They know the language, the terminology of the field.  This portrays more professionalism and knowledge.  I did some homework on the subject and noticed a difference when I put the technique to work on my resume cover letter.

Custom medical cover letters aren’t so difficult to write, you simply have to show knowledge of your job and the company if you can get good relative information on the place.  I like to find out a little about the place I’m applying too.  If I know the place I’m applying for has been recognized for, lets say, burn treatment or what ever.  I point out how learning their techniques would help me continue to develop my skills and how it would be great working with certain individuals employed there who are well versed on the subject.

I always keep my letter to just one page.  Being that its a medical resume cover letter, the resume is many times longer than two pages and making the letter to long would give the reader four pages to read.  I keep it at one page and make reference to parts of my resume where the reader can find more information about my experience on what ever subject Im trying to put across.

That said writing a medical resume cover letter is not as difficult as it seems.  Having the right tools and doing a little research will help land interviews and get more job offers.

What worked once can work again.  My administrative resume cover letter usually doesn’t travel by email.  Why you ask?  It just doesn’t impact the reader in the same way.  Not to mention that it can easily get lost in junk mail or erased by mistake.  I’m going to share here what worked for me.

My resume and administrative cover letter stand out for two reasons.  One I have experience and reference to prove it and two I deliver the copy in person.  Extra work?  Absolutely, but it gets results.  I know were in a world of convenience with email and fax but I know that bottom line they’re going to hire a person and that’s what they want them to relate to when they review my resume.

When it comes to experience I have it and I make sure to put it on my administrative resume cover letter.  I’ve been an administrative assistant for the last 5 years.  I know the job.  I have been moved around from one person to the other and I’ve learned a lot about how to work with different personalities and expectations.  What I’ve found to work best on my administrative cover letter is to touch on these points and deliver a custom cover letter to the reader.

I wouldn’t dare send a generic letter.  I’ve done that and I hardly ever got an interview.  In my opinion you don’t stand out when the reader reads the usual ” Dear Sir or Madam,  Thank you for taking the time to review my resume.  You’ll find that…” and on and on.  Its all the same over used format.  That’s why it doesn’t stand out.  I’ve had much better results writing a custom letter.

I start my administrative cover letter by briefly planning out the main points I want the reader to catch.  I find it very useful to employ my cover letter manual and make the letter industry specific.  This helps me connect with the reader in a professional language that their familiar with.  I do some research on the type of industry the company is in and if its related to what I was doing before I follow it up with something like “when you review paragraph 2 of my resume you’ll see I was involved with a certain account when I was employed at where ever” “which I feel has prepared me to take on this position you have available.”  Paint a picture, then deliver it in person.  If you can briefly talk to the person who’ll be doing the hiring and find out who you’ll be assisting, you can further customize the letter.

This has worked for me.  Emailing is convenient but getting the job is worth the extra work.

Entry level resumes and cover letters should be exciting to put together.  Throw caution to the wind and make your cover letter stand out.  Being new to a company or the field doesn’t mean you should be easily looked over.  I know there’s ways to make your cover letter stand out and above the competition.

First thing I like to do with my entry level cover letter is to sound energetic.  How do you sound energetic on a letter?  Play around with descriptive words.  Enthusiasm can go a long way.  Experience is strong but the enthusiasm is something companies sometimes lack.  Enthusiasm to get the job done and have something to prove to the company and to yourself can help you land the job.  Many times companies are looking for new energy to motivate themselves and others.  You can be that person.  Assuming its part of your personality!

Getting hired quickly also goes hand in hand with the interest you show.  If you’ve read Napoleon Hills book, Think and Grow Rich.  You’ll remember a section of the book where he describes wanting to be hired by a particular company.  He visited, called and telegraphed till he got what he wanted.  If you haven’t read it read it.  It’s a great book.  Make an effort to visit the place and try to deliver the resume in person to the indicated person.  Make a personal connection.  That’s an advantage emailed resumes don’t have.

Those two tips were proven to work when I was applying to jobs right out of college. Being that my experience was limited.  I couldn’t put together a long resume but I could make a professional custom entry lever resume cover letter that emphasized my energy and desire to learn.

Also, before I forget.  If you get a little knowledge on the company, for example, the field of work it in.  Manufacturing, development sales what ever and who the competitors are.  You can show yourself to be well informed and capable of the position.  The less they feel they have to teach you the better.  How much do you want the job?

Again with my entry lever resume cover letter these steps above helped.  I wish I could say for sure if it was luck or the letter but I was hired within a two month period.  I didn’t continue to apply anywhere else.  I like where I was hired and I plan on staying there for a while.  The opportunity for growth is there.

Your Job Employment Cover Letter: How do You Know Where to Send It

In submitting your job employment resume cover letter how do you know where to send this letter?

Some organizations do not accept unsolicited applications, resumes or cover letters.

Often applicants who address communications to the human resource (H.R.) department get a standard form letter stating that no applications are currently being accepted. So much for the successful job hunter. The task just got more challenging.

How do you know how and where to submit your employment search cover letter?

First of all find out who hires. You cannot go fishing if you do not what bait the fish like and where the fish are located. To boost your chances of getting an interview address your letter to the specific person or areas that have hiring authority for the position that you are applying for.

If possible address the letter to the supervisor / department head / manager who would directly supervise your work. It should be patently obvious that it is not wise to address your cover letter to “Whom It May Concern”. This job seeking tactic will target your letter to the trash bin.

How do you get to know the right person’s name? It all comes down to diligence and standard investigation and research tactics.

One method is to call the target employer and say that you are doing career research and want to address the letter of inquiry to the person who specializes in your career area. Get the person’s full name and title. Verify and recheck the spelling and address to ensure that it is correct.

When you do call, introduce yourself, get the name of the person you talk with and thank that person by name for her or his help. Always say that you are a student or are doing research. The person that you speak to could possibly help you later, and using names establishes a friendly, courteous tone.

Another tact is to go directly to the human resources officer, if one exists. Ask whether there is an organizational “chart” or organizational “map” which you could use for your career planning class or personal research. This chart of map should provide you with the name of the department head to which you can address your cover letter.

If this method seems inappropriate for your job career employment search, ask members of your job search employment network to help you devise and plan a more workable approach.

Always use your creative abilities to dare to different and innovative. To be on the cutting creative edge, however always be most courteous, polite and professional.

If possible contact the department head of your target job personally to get you in the door sooner. If you send your cover letter and resume only to the human resources department, it may well be that the person or persons who head that specific department you are interested in may never see these documents.

On the other hand, if you send a letter and resume directly to the person that you would work for, then your chances of getting an interview ill be greatly increased. It is true however that the human resources department may feel sidelined and resentful at being circumvented in the organizational structure.

How do you handle this situation? I the employer is accepting applications, send one letter and resume to the Human Resources department and one letter to the department head. Indicate in your letter that you have sent similar communications to each party. At the worst both letters will wind up in the human resources department. I the employer is not officially accepting applications, send your cover letter and resume to the department only. If your resume and cover letter are persuasive and well prepared then you may well still get that interview.

You have probably heard that you should be careful when taking free advice or using free samples. The understanding is that more often than not when you get something free you are getting exactly what you paid for. There are, however, exceptions to every rule. This means that there are times when a free sample resume cover letter is very well worth sending with only a few minor adjustments to make it suit your specific needs.

The very first thing you are going to want to do is make it personal to the person you will be sending it to. While it is all nice and good, not to mention time saving, to send a generic greeting it also shows lack of preparation on your part when a little bit of research could very well result in you knowing the name of the hiring manager for the company to which you are applying and adjusting your greeting to include that person by name.
