As the President of Résumé Solutions, I have worked with 1000s of new immigrants who came to our organization for help when they have been unable to find work for months after arriving in Canada.  One of the most common errors that we see in their résumés is spelling and grammatical mistakes. Another mistake is including obsolete information or detail, which has no relevance to a Canadian employer. Others include too much personal information, which is a major faux pas in the Canadian environment.

Even though Canadian labour laws prohibits its employers from discriminating against job seeker based on issues such  as age, marital status or religion, it would be naïve to assume that all employers adhere to the law at all times. With this in mind, it is best not to mention your age in your résumé or cover letter. There is always the possibility that you could be discriminated against should the employer feel you are too young or too old for the position.

To be effective, a well-written résumé should be concise and to the point. You should not write a résumé that consists of a laundry list of responsibilities for each role you have held throughout your career. Though many immigrants come from countries where longer, detailed résumés are the norm, a résumé written for the Canadian employer should be no longer than three pages (two is preferable). While writing your résumé you need to remember that you main goal is to convey to a prospective employer the contributions you made in each of your past roles and how you can replicate these success for their organization. Do not use long-winded sentences or dated terminology. An example of what not to do: “Dear sirs, with your permission, herein is included my résumé and cover letter, in accordance with your request for someone of my esteemed talents which are in line with your organization’s long-term goals” employers do not want to read long, cumbersome or jargon-laden sentences. Be specific and to the point.

1. Start with experience, not education

Experienced individuals should write their job experiences first and not education in their professional resumes. Your job experience is what makes you truly valuable. Unlike the entry-level candidates, the experienced professionals should list their degrees and certificates at the end of the resume. Employers are more concerned about the job performance of experienced professionals than their educational background.

2. Create an image that matches the salary you want

As you write your resume, keep in mind the level of job and salary you want. Be careful to use the appropriate language for your resume, so that it creates an impression that presents you at the appropriate level. Prepare your resume in such a way that either you stay at your current salary level or move up – but never go backwards.

3. List accomplishments, not just responsibilities

4. Proofread your resume

What Resumes Should Never Contain:

Just as there are items every resume must include, there are a few things you want to stay away from, according to the experts. They are:


-Salary requirements/history. When an employer asks for your salary history he is trying to determine one of two things: can he afford you, or how cheaply can he hire you.

-Writing “resume” at the top. Of course it’s a resume. Hiring managers know it, and so do you.

-References available upon request at the bottom. Don’t give a hiring manager a chance to set your resume aside. Include a separate list of references to make their job easier, and expedite the interviewing process.

-Reasons for leaving you’re past job. If they want to know, they’ll ask at the interview.

-Religious or political affiliation. This type of information can work for or against you, and by law, cannot be considered anyway when hiring a new employee.

-Any negative responses or opinions. You’re trying to put your best foot forward here and look like a team player, so if you have anything bad to say about anyone or any organization, keep it to yourself!


Once you have the must-haves written down and the absolute no-no’s crossed off, it’s time to look for things that will set you apart from the rest of the applicants. Some other things you may want to consider mentioning on your resume are: military service and a personal interest section that highlights what you love most (in 2-3 sentences). This enables the hiring manger to see you as a real person, and get an idea of some of your indirect skills that may be useful on the job.


Some resume writers also like to include an objectives statement on their resume to help better define your job goals for the future. Objectives are best when they are focused. Be as specific as possible. Avoid vague language.


When actually setting down to write your resume, you have to decide which format you’ll use. The first is the chronological format, which lists your work history in chronological order (either from oldest to newest, or vice versa). Although the most popular style used by job seekers, it also tends to be the most boring, and doesn’t necessarily offer the best way to showcase all the unique benefits you have to offer.


The functional format offers a summary of job-related information, emphasizing keys skills and experience, out of context. This summary actually replaces specific job descriptions. Many job seekers use this format to hide gaps in work history or other weaknesses.


One of the best formats for highlighting prospective employees strengths is the combination format, which takes the more flattering key skills aspect of the functional format, and combines it with the work history of the chronological format. Easy to read, easy to decipher and easy to highlight strengths, the combination format offers the most information in the most flattering style.


Writing a resume that gets attention isn’t difficult, if you follow a few simple format rules and remember that it’s a tool to distinguish you among all the other candidates applying for a job. Be direct, be assertive and be honest, to let your future employer see all the wonderful attributes that you can bring to their company.

The company recruiter or human resources professional will then perform a search of their database to pull up all qualified applicants so that they can begin scheduling interviews. If your resume does not contain the keywords that they’ve used in their search of the database, your resume will not come up. You should include a list of at least six keywords in bullet point form on your resume.

Your list of achievements will generally follow the two aforementioned sections. Your achievements help the hiring manager to paint a picture in his or her mind as to what type of benefit they might realize from hiring you. Your achievements should communicate some benefit to the employer such as saving money, making money or saving time. These are benefits that all companies want. You should try and use numbers or percentages in formulating your accomplishment statements. Start by describing the situation or problem then, describe the steps you took to resolve the problem and finally the result you achieved.

Fonts, styling and colors- For a medical administrator assistant resume, following the old route is better. It means to draft the resume in a simple and formal font with the content typed in a lucid language using the Times New Roman font of the MS-Word. However, the Times New Roman font has been used many a times and thus, choosing Arial for a change would be better

For example do not list that you like to read as one of your hobbies if applying for a construction job you would state that if you were trying to work in a library. That means employer has to read at least 300 resumes, and to “stand up” among your competitors, your resume must be simple and straight to the point. Some people treat resume as composition about themselves, which makes their resume a really long and boring. The employer has no time to read through, so try to be as simple and as straight forward in your resume. Show your potential employer what you want them to know, what is your strength and what makes you so suit for the job and then wait for your interview.

2) Choose the right keywords: Due to the overwhelming numbers of response for each job post, nowadays companies tends to use certain keyword filtering software and only will read resumes that contain certain specific keywords. If your resume doesn’t contain such related keywords to the job you apply for, your resume doesn’t even have a chance to get read, which means that you are out before the “game” actually starts. Normally the keywords will be nouns, and it will appear in the job ads where they specify what are they expecting for. Spot the keywords in their job descriptive and include it into your resume.

3) Avoid negativity: Please try to avoid any and all information that might sound negative for the employer. This is very important in both resume and when you attend interview. Please do not complain on how bad is your previous company, or any of your weakness (skill and attitude). You might think that that is only a minor weakness, but as your employer has lots of other choices (other applicants) your weakness might be your losing point.
